Course Description

Teachers nowadays encounter the challenge of staying up to date with the ever-fast changes in technology. The new digital form the world is taking with websites, social networks, learning platforms, the abundance of resources, including the ongoing pandemic, has forced teachers and students to adapt alike.

This course twofold aim are:
First, to hands-on prepare educators on the challenges of creating and managing a webpage for a school or classroom using the WordPress platform and various useful plugins.
And second, to hands-on prepare educators on the challenges of creating and managing a Learning Management Platform (LMS) with the most popular and widely used example of LMS, Moodle. Educators will learn how to create an LMS with online classroom management features, course resources, assignment and homework submission, online tests and exercises and a rewarding gamification system such as Open Badges.

Monday

Introduction to the course and get-to-know your trainers and fellow participants with networking activities.  Practical issue arrangements and weekly schedule timetable. Presentation and registration by all participants to the “Emphasys Key Action 1 lifetime support platform“. This innovative platform will grant you access to all the material and supporting documentation of the course as well as a discussion forum for communication with all participants and trainers.

Introduction to web page design and the different ways of creating a website. Overview of the various designing tools on the market today. Find out what is WordPress and what you can do with it. Installing and running it.

Learn how to access your site and create a post or a page, format text, and create and manage links. Find out how to make your webpage more attractive by adding images and image galleries, how to add media from YouTube and other services and how to publish your posts and pages.

Start managing content and editing posts and pages; understand how WordPress handles media content. Learn how to change your site’s appearance, selecting and changing themes, headers, menus, and how to make your site mobile and tablet friendly.

Tuesday

Discover how you can extend WordPress with plugins specially designed for teachers, posting assignments and school events, creating a contact page, adding social media buttons, editing your user profile, adding and managing users/students.

Learn how to keep up to date with your classroom’s web page’s maintenance and security issues, the various security plugins you can use, and troubleshooting and solutions if a site crash.

Wednesday

Introduction on the concept of Learning Management Systems, its features, benefits and usage. Various examples of famous and successful Moodle platforms. Hands-on installation and setup of a personalised Moodle platform.

Trainees will get familiar with the layout of a Moodle page, its customisation options, the text editor to add learning content and all the needed skills to start a new course.    Trainees will also get familiar with Moodle’s tools for structuring and organising learning material in groups and sections.

Thursday

Discussion on using resources to enrich learning content with attractive and meaningful extra attachments to empower the learning experience. Trainees will get familiar with all kinds of resources that can integrate the lesson’s plain text, learn how to use labels, and organise resources in pages, blocks, and how to group them in folders.

Friday

Learn to assign tasks to students, receive feedback, assess students’ preparation. Participants will learn how to use question banks, assign tasks, create a quiz, manage a forum, add surveys, set a glossary.

Finally, the course will discuss the tools provided by Moodle to manage participants. Hands-on on how to enrol students, change permissions, send messages or newsletters to students.  Get familiar with grade book management, grouping students and Open Badges.

Saturday

Change of venue to a coastal city of Cyprus (Larnaca or Famagusta). Recap and conclusion of the course. Course evaluation, recommendations, outcomes and further steps – remote support through the Emphasys Key Action 1 platform. Award of certificates to the attendees. Arrangements and assistance for airport transportation.
