Course Description

Our digital world is changing rapidly. New communication methods appear, and while using them, we expose ourselves to new threats and risks.
As the web has become a part of mainstream life, some educators and professionals have noted that a significant percentage of people using the web do so in a compulsive and out-of-control manner, this is Internet addiction! Discover how to control it with real-life scenarios and help students and co-workers learn how to use the Internet in a balanced way.

The course also hosts a special section on Social media. Social media have become second nature to us: posting photos with friends, sharing our location at a party, and holidays. But how safe is it for anyone to use them so recklessly? With this course, you will learn the basics about Internet Security, the dangers you and your students might face online such as fraud and harassment, how to prevent unauthorized access of your data and how to protect your own and your students’ online identity.

Monday

Introduction to the course and get-to-know your trainers and fellow participants with networking activities. Practical issue arrangements and weekly schedule timetable. Presentation and registration by all participants to the “Emphasys Key Action 1 lifetime support platform”. This innovative platform will grant you access to all the material and supporting documentation of the course as well as a discussion forum for communication with all participants and trainers.
An introduction to Internet addiction. Learn the dangers of online addiction and self-reflect on your own use. Help your students and your colleagues confront their Internet addictions—good practices and examples.

Tuesday

Introduction to the basic concepts of Internet Security. Identify the threats that exist in the Internet world, and learn more about antivirus software. Learn ways to protect your personal and student’s information. Discover what Social Engineering is all about and how a hacker can use it against a student. Learn how to secure your computer files, prevent unauthorized access to your data, and the safest way to back up your data in school and home.

Wednesday

Discover what Secure and Non-Secure Web Browsing is. Learn to distinguish a legitimate website from a potential malware-threatening website. Learn about Digital certificates and secure encryption. Safe usage of Social Networks and possible security issues at home and in the classroom. Turn the tables and utilise the Social networks currently being used by students and young people to your classroom’s advantage — examples with scenarios and cases.

Thursday

Familiarisation with Social Media Security and how to improve it by making your own and your organisation’s social media accounts safer and more private. Learn the dangers of sharing personal information and how to communicate these threats to your students in an easy-to-understand format. Learnt the steps to follow to have a Secure online communication—examples of Instant Messaging and Email cases.

Friday

Learn about the main hazards which teenagers face in today’s technological world. Online harassment, depression, trolling and Cyberbullying in school/work environment and how to confront it – discussion with our inhouse psychologist and criminology expert. Presentation of case-scenarios, good practises, useful tools and workshop.

Saturday

Change of venue to a coastal city of Cyprus (Larnaca or Famagusta). Recap and conclusion of the course. Course evaluation, recommendations, outcomes and further steps – remote support through the Emphasys Key Action 1 platform. Award of certificates to the attendees. Arrangements and assistance for airport transportation.
