Immersive Learning with VR, AR & Gamification

Course Fee per person

Up to € 480 (Fully Funded)

Course Description

Immersive technologies and game-based approaches can transform learning by allowing learners to explore places, situations and ideas that may be difficult to experience in a traditional classroom. This practical course focuses not on learning individual VR or AR tools, but on designing meaningful immersive learning experiences and understanding when VR, AR, Mixed Reality, gamification or game-based learning can add genuine educational value.

Participants will experience immersive learning from the learner’s perspective using the Meta Quest VR equipment available at the EMPHASYS STEAM Lab, explore existing immersive learning scenarios and evaluate their educational value. They will also experiment with AR creation and develop learning experiences connected to subjects such as Geography, History, Mathematics, Biology and other Science subjects, Languages, Art, VET, cultural heritage and environmental education.

The course modernises gamification by moving beyond points, badges and leaderboards towards storytelling, missions, challenges, levels, progress, feedback, escape-room concepts and collaborative games designed to motivate learners. Participants will also explore accessibility, motion sickness, sensory overload, age appropriateness, privacy and safe use of immersive technologies, including alternatives for learners who cannot or do not wish to use VR headsets.

By the end of the course, participants will design and test a classroom-ready Immersive Learning Experience combining VR, AR and/or gamification according to their subject and learners.

  • Design a classroom-ready Immersive Learning Experience and implementation plan that includes learning objectives, technology choices, learner activities, assessment, accessibility, safety and responsible-use considerations.
Certification & Validation of Learning Outcomes

Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance upon successful completion of the course. Upon request, EMPHASYS also supports participants and their sending organisations with the documentation required for the recognition and validation of their Erasmus+ mobility, including the Europass Mobility document and relevant mobility documentation.

Additional documentation can be provided upon request to support mobility reporting, recognition and dissemination requirements.

Cultural Activities

Participants can enrich their stay in Cyprus through a range of cultural and social activities, including guided city tours, visits to cultural and heritage sites, traditional villages, nature destinations and other local experiences.

Additional fees may apply for full-day excursions and journeys, depending on transportation, entrance fees and the selected activity.

European Networking & Exchange of Practices

EMPHASYS courses offer opportunities to connect with educators, trainers and professionals from across Europe, exchange experiences, educational practices and ideas, build professional connections and explore opportunities for future cooperation and partnerships.

Course Schedule

* Daily training hours: 09:00–14:00

The course programme may be adapted to participants’ needs and group profile. Coffee breaks are provided by EMPHASYS each training day. Cultural activities, study visits and networking opportunities are included as part of the course schedule.

Monday

From Engagement to Immersive Learning

  • Definition and comparison of gamification, game-based learning, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality, focusing on what each approach offers, when it is appropriate and how it can support different learning objectives.
  • Explore when gamification adds genuine educational value and when it can become an unnecessary layer of rewards or competition.
  • Experiencing game-based challenges using storytelling, missions, collaborative tasks, progression, feedback and problem-solving, rather than relying primarily on points, badges and leaderboards.
  • Explore the principles of meaningful learner engagement, motivation, active participation and purposeful challenge.
  • Analysis of examples of gamified and immersive learning experiences and select the most appropriate approach for different classroom scenarios.

Tuesday

Experiencing Virtual Reality as a Learner

  • Introduction to immersive learning through hands-on use of the Meta Quest VR equipment available at the EMPHASYS STEAM Lab.
  • Experience and comparison of different VR learning scenarios from the learner’s perspective, considering immersion, interaction, engagement, accessibility and educational value.
  • Explore how VR can support learning in Geography, History, Mathematics, Biology and other Science subjects, Languages, Art, cultural heritage, VET and environmental education.
  • Discussion on when VR can provide experiences that are difficult, expensive, dangerous or impossible to reproduce in a traditional classroom.
  • Evaluation of VR experiences against specific learning objectives and identify situations where VR may not be the most appropriate teaching approach.

Wednesday

Designing with VR and AR

  • Explore how educators can move from consuming immersive content to designing meaningful learning experiences.
  • Investigation of simple AR creation approaches and develop an AR-enhanced learning activity connected to their own subject or curriculum.
  • Explore how images, 3D objects, information, locations and interactive elements can be used to create contextualised learning experiences.
  • Development of an initial immersive learning concept combining VR and/or AR with clear learning objectives, learner tasks and expected outcomes.
  • Peer feedback to evaluate whether the technology genuinely enhances the learning experience rather than simply adding novelty.

Thursday

Storytelling, Missions and Game-Based Learning

  • Explore storytelling as a powerful structure for immersive and game-based learning, including characters, scenarios, missions, challenges and meaningful progression.
  • Designing of a learning mission or escape-room-style educational challenge connected to a curriculum topic or professional learning objective.
  • Explore collaborative games where learners work together to solve problems, make decisions, communicate and apply knowledge rather than simply compete against one another.
  • Integration of feedback, levels, discovery and meaningful choices into their learning experiences while considering learner motivation.
  • Explore how immersive scenarios and game-based challenges can be used across different subjects, educational levels and learner groups.

Friday

Inclusive, Accessible and Responsible Immersive Learning

  • Explore practical accessibility considerations including motion sickness, sensory overload, visual or physical accessibility, different learning needs and individual comfort levels.
  • Discussion on age appropriateness, safe use of VR headsets, appropriate duration of immersive activities, supervision, hygiene and the importance of balancing immersive experiences with non-digital forms of learning.
  • Development of alternative participation pathways for learners who cannot or do not wish to use a VR headset, ensuring that immersive learning does not exclude learners.
  • Explore privacy and responsible use of immersive technologies, including learner data, accounts, content selection and safe digital behaviour.
  • Adaptation of an immersive or gamified learning activity to make it more inclusive, accessible, safe and appropriate for a diverse classroom.

Saturday

Creating, Testing and Implementing an Immersive Learning Experience

  • Creation of a complete classroom-ready Immersive Learning Experience combining VR, AR and/or gamification according to their subject, learners and educational context.
