Dyslexia-Inclusive Classrooms: Practical Strategies for Accessible and Engaging Learning

Course Fee per person

Up to € 480 (Fully Funded)

Course Description

Schools today are increasingly expected to respond to learner diversity and create environments where all learners can participate and progress. Dyslexia is estimated to affect around 10% of the population, meaning that educators are highly likely to encounter learners who experience dyslexia-related barriers in their classrooms. Difficulties related to reading, writing, processing, memory and organisation can affect not only academic achievement but also participation, motivation and confidence. Educators therefore need practical approaches that anticipate learner variability and reduce barriers from the outset.

This course explores dyslexia through an inclusive-education perspective, combining Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated and multisensory teaching, accessible learning-material design, inclusive assessment and learner wellbeing. Participants will also explore assistive and digital technologies, including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, reading and writing support tools, and appropriate uses of AI to enhance accessibility.

Through practical activities, case studies and classroom scenarios, participants will learn to recognise potential barriers, adapt teaching strategies and materials, differentiate learning activities and provide flexible ways for learners to participate and demonstrate learning. By the end of the course, each participant will develop a classroom-ready Dyslexia-Inclusive Learning Activity, translating the course principles into practical strategies for primary and secondary classrooms.

Monday

Understanding Dyslexia and Barriers to Learning

  • Develop a contemporary understanding of dyslexia, its characteristics and the diversity of ways it may influence learning.
  • Explore potential barriers related to reading, writing, spelling, processing, working memory, organisation and classroom participation through case studies.
  • Clarify the educator’s role in recognising possible signs, documenting observations and adapting teaching, while distinguishing this from formal identification and diagnosis.

Tuesday

Universal Design for Learning and Dyslexia-Inclusive Education

  • Explore Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and its application in designing learning environments that anticipate learner variability and reduce barriers.
  • Examine multiple ways of presenting information, supporting engagement and enabling learners to participate
  • Analyse classroom scenarios and existing activities to identify potential barriers and explore how UDL principles can make learning more accessible.

Wednesday

Differentiated, Structured and Multisensory Teaching Strategies

  • Explore practical strategies to support reading, spelling, writing, vocabulary, instructions, sequencing, processing and working memory across different subject areas.
  • Experience structured and multisensory approaches combining visual, auditory and gamification techniques to strengthen engagement and participation.
  • Practise differentiating, scaffolding and gamifying classroom activities to respond to different learner needs while maintaining shared learning objectives.

Thursday

Accessible Learning Materials, Assistive Technology and AI

  • Explore principles for creating accessible worksheets, presentations, reading texts, instructions and digital resources.
  • Practise reviewing and adapting existing classroom materials to remove unnecessary barriers for learners with dyslexia.
  • Explore text-to-speech, speech-to-text, digital annotation, reading and writing support tools, and appropriate AI-supported tools that can enhance accessibility and learner independence.

Friday

Inclusive Assessment, Participation and Learner Wellbeing

  • Explore inclusive assessment approaches and appropriate accommodations that allow learners with dyslexia to demonstrate their knowledge and skills while maintaining intended learning outcomes.
  • Examine flexible forms of constructive feedback through practical classroom examples.
  • Explore how repeated learning difficulties may affect participation, motivation and confidence, and identify practical strategies educators can use to foster learner autonomy, engagement and a supportive classroom environment.

Saturday

From Inclusive Principles to Classroom Practice

  • Bring together UDL, differentiation, multisensory teaching, accessibility, technology and inclusive assessment through practical classroom design activities.
  • Redesign an existing lesson or develop a classroom-ready Dyslexia-Inclusive Learning Activity, incorporating accessible materials, appropriate adaptations and strategies for participation and assessment.
  • Present the activity to peers, exchange constructive feedback and develop an individual action plan for transferring dyslexia-inclusive practices into participants’ own classroom contexts.

Study Visits

*Study visits will be selected according to availability
