Course Description

This course is ideal for educators and youth workers wishing to experience the creation of VR and AR applications on a practical level. Additionally, this course discusses gamification elements for making attractive simulations for students in the classroom and other learning environments.
The training starts with introducing what gamification is and how it works, followed a discussion on the eight gamified learning principles.

Participants will get hands-on and create simple video games using the Unity platform and experience what VR, AR, XR is all about with hands-on examples. The available VR and AR platforms and scenarios on which one will work best depending on the situation are discussed.
Finally, the course dives in the area of creating VR and AR experiences and testing them by using state-of-the-art equipment such as the Oculus Rift S.

Topics Include

• What is Gamification, its significance, how it works and its downsides
• The eight principles of gamified learning
• Video Game Design with Unity engine
• VR and AR equipment for a classroom
• VR simulation Design with Unity engine
• Augmented Reality application design with Unity engine

Aims in relation to the development of your organisation
  • The organisation will gain expert teachers on gamification methods.
  • The organisation will gain know-how with cutting edge technology such as VR and AR.
  • The organisation will enrich its knowledge in video game design and VR and AR development.
Course Schedule

* The course can be modified according to the preferences of the attendees

Monday

Introduction to the course and get-to-know your trainers and fellow participants with networking activities.  Practical issue arrangements and weekly schedule timetable. Presentation and registration by all participants to the “Emphasys Key Action 1 lifetime support platform“. This innovative platform will grant you access to all the material and supporting documentation of the course as well as a discussion forum for communication with all participants and trainers.

We will start with a description of what gamification is all about. Its significance in the classroom, how it works and its downsides. We will touch on the eight gamified learning principles that every educator should follow when designing a gamified course. We will see several gamification examples and discuss possible scenarios where it can enrich the learning experience.

Tuesday

We will start by understanding the fundamentals of game design and the steps to follow for implementing it. We will then learn the basics around the Unity Platform, which will be used to create our video games. We will get hands-on and create two different exciting 3D video games.

Wednesday

Introduction to VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality) and Mixed Reality, their differences and similarities and which technology is best applicable depending on the situation.

A discussion will follow on the most suitable equipment in the classroom, in indoor and outdoor activities. We will then explore several VR applications using VR equipment (Oculus Rift S) and their use in various situations and environments.

Thursday

We will design our VR application factoring in aspects such as motion sickness and locomotion using the Unity game engine.

Learn the fundamentals of VR development by creating a sandbox platformer with different mechanics and functions and running it on the Oculus Rift S VR headset. Creating this experience will provide you with foundational skills that can be applied to more advanced projects.

Friday

We will explore the various AR applications which can be used in a classroom. We will touch on AR content targeted to learners who may not be as engaged in learning as their peers.

We will see how teachers can incorporate AR in Geography, History, Mathematics, Biology and Art. Finally, we will look at some good practises of AR used in several scenario cases.

Finally, we will be designing an AR application that can be experienced from a tablet and a smartphone using the Unity game engine.

Saturday

Change of venue to a coastal city of Cyprus (Larnaca or Famagusta). Recap and conclusion of the course. Course evaluation, recommendations, outcomes and further steps – remote support through the Emphasys Key Action 1 platform. Award of certificates to the attendees. Arrangements and assistance for airport transportation.
